Why Black Museums inaugural event

Art Galleries at Black Studies is excited to announce a multiyear program titled Why Black Museums, which honors and examines Black museums’ contributions to the museum field. This spring we will host our inaugural events, which will highlight several scholars and professionals working within The University of Texas at Austin Black Studies department as well as Black museums across the United States.

On Friday, April 21 Why Black Museums will commence with a day of events dedicated to the theme: “Honoring the Past, Envisioning the Future.” The morning roundtable (10:30am-12pm) features Dr. Ted Gordon, Rachel Winston, and Phillip Townsend, who will converse on the development of the African and African Diaspora Studies Department at The University of Texas at Austin.

The afternoon panel features Dr. Ariana Curtis, Cameron Shaw, Dr. Alvia Wardlaw, and Dr. Cherise Smith. Panelists will discuss their personal and professional connections with Black museums, the development of the institutions they now call home, and the future of community-focused museums. Delphine Sims and Dr. Gaila Sims will moderate and lead a Q&A.

Following this event, the audience is invited to join the panelists and moderators at a reception in AGBS’s Christian-Green Gallery. We hope artists, scholars, museum professionals, students, and other community members will gather with us to recognize these incredible speakers, celebrate the organizations with which they are affiliated, and look ahead to these pivotal institutions’ future innovations.

In recognition of the importance of accessibility and sustainability, this event will be offered in a hybrid format. If you wish to attend online, please navigate to AGBS’s YouTube Channel, where a livestream of the event will be made available.

How a 17th-century Woman Writer Can Revitalize the History of the Book

In-person & Online

In an era when many women refused to put their writing into print, polymath Margaret Cavendish, Duchess of Newcastle (1623–1673) not only insisted on print as the best medium for her drama, philosophy, poetry, and science fiction, but also was meticulously involved in her books' creation and customization, both during and after the printing process.

As part of the Pforzheimer Lecture Series, Dr. Liza Blake, Associate Professor at the University of Toronto, will highlight Cavendish's work to craft a reputation by carefully managing the distribution of her writing.

The Art Galleries (TAG) at Austin Community College is hosting an Opening Reception on Thursday, September 15 for their exhibition Cultivating Community through Art: Sam Coronado's Serie Project and its Continuing LegacyThe Opening Reception starts at 6:00pm and is free and open to the public. At the Opening Reception, visitors will be offered a first glimpse into this exhibition which highlights the wide reaching influence Sam Coronado’s teachings had on Austin-based artists and those beyond the Texas borders. Refreshments and music will be provided. Please register here.

About the Exhibition:

This exhibition highlights the wide-reaching influence of Sam Coronado (1946 - 2013) former ACC professor, artist mentor, and Chicano art movement icon. Coronado’s teachings and guidance made a lasting impact on Austin’s artistic community and many others beyond Texas borders. A substantial element to his legacy is the grant-funded Serie Project (1993-2013), which provided new opportunities for hundreds of emerging and established artists to learn screen-printing techniques by producing prints at Coronado Studio, located in the Austin neighborhood of Montopolis.

Coronado’s commitment to equity, inclusion, and education reverberates through his work at the Serie Project, his time at ACC, and his mentorship to students. Coronado ensured that the high-quality works made at the studio were reproducible, affordable, and represented the viewpoints of undervalued communities. This exhibition demonstrates the far-reaching impacts and new opportunities that can be cultivated through persistence and dedication to the arts.

Exhibition dates: September 15 - December 8, 2022

Opening Reception: September 15, 2022 6pm - 8pm
