The German-Texan Heritage Society is a group of individuals with the common goal of furthering German-Texan culture through many activities. Founded in 1978, the German-Texan Heritage Society is renowned for the books it publishes, its collection of immigrant and historical books, and the complete collection on microfiche of the German newspaper, Texas Vorwärts. GTHS is housed in a historic rammed earth building that was built in 1857 by German settlers to serve as the first charter school in Austin. Today, 150 years later, one can learn German, research German-Texan history in our Pioneer Library, attend our monthly speaker/music series, participate in cultural events and personally preserve this historic structure for generations to come. The GTHS is a non-profit organization dependent on the generosity of friends and members who support its mission.
