Eve & Shiva: Sculpture by Charles Umlauf and Gene Owens

Join us at the UMLAUF from May 9th through August 30th for an intensive focus on the 1960s and 1970s sculpture of Charles Umlauf (1910-1994) and Gene Owens (born 1931). Fort Worth area native Owens spent the summer of 1961 studying with Professor Umlauf, quickly becoming an accomplished abstract and figurative sculpture in his own right. He worked at the side of Japanese American artist Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988) for many years, traveling between New York and Texas. In the same era, Umlauf spent every summer casting in Italy.  Eve & Shiva centers around two bronze female figures—Umlauf’s Eve with Apple (1974) and Owens’ Shiva (1965)‑-that convey the different influences on and journeys of these artists.
