31st Annual Wendish Fest
The annual Wendish Fest is always the fourth Sunday of September. The day begins with church services at Historic St. Paul Lutheran Church, one of the Painted Churches of Texas. A traditional Wendish meal of sausage, sauerkraut, green beans, noodles, beets, peaches, homemade bread, coffee and tea, and desserts is available from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The snack booth opens at 2:00 with sausage and sauerkraut boats & wraps, drumsticks, noodles, desserts and cold drinks.
At the museum complex demonstrations and exhibits include Wendish Easter Egg decorating, German Christmas Market including items from the Erzgebirge Region of Germany and Serbin’s own Wiederhold Woodworks in the Kilian building. Cording, quilting, lace making and crocheting are demonstrated in the St. Paul building. Genealogy assistance is available in the Peter Building Library. A country store at the museum circle drive includes items for sale.
On the picnic grounds enjoy entertainment by the Moravians Band spreading the joy of Polka music throughout the day. Demonstrations include spinning, weaving, rug looming, basket weaving, knitting, stone ground corn meal with a 1918 Grist Mill, corn shelling, homemade soap, sauerkraut making, noodle making, wine making, sausage stuffing, classic autos, vintage fire and farm equipment, cross cut sawing, and Balcones Forge Blacksmith. Participate in the silent and live auctions. Children’s activities include face painting, stick horse races, coloring contest, train rides and “Kletternpfosten” (greased pole climbing). Competitions include Washer Pitching and a Coffee Cake Bake-Off.
