Save Austin’s Cemeteries
Save Austin’s Cemeteries is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving historic cemeteries in the Austin through documentation and education, and to promoting historic cemeteries of Austin as local and state cultural resources. SAC documents the conditions at the five city cemeteries including the headstones and researches the histories of the cemeteries and cemetery residents. SAC provides input to City Council and the Parks & Recreation Department on cemetery needs.
We provide educational opportunities to the public by providing walking tours several times a year that cover a variety of topics, such as Texas Independence, Prominent Women of Austin, Place Names of Austin, and the annual event called Murder, Mayhem & Misadventure for Halloween.
SAC also provides tours for school and scout groups on individualized topics. At our popular guest speaker sessions, guests are invited to talk about their field of interest. This has included Jewish Burial Customs, Ethnic Heritage in Austin, George Washington Littlefield Family History, Cemetery Symbolism to name a few.

Oakwood Cemetery Photo Documentation Project
Save Austin's Cemeteries needs help photographing and thoroughly documenting each gravesite in detail at Oakwood Cemetery, a historic "outdoor museum" established in 1839, to have photo reference shots in case headstones are damaged. We'll work in teams of photographers and data recorders. Be sure to wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes (the terrain is uneven) and bring a digital camera if you have one. The team will be working north of Oakwood’s Main Avenue, close to MLK Blvd, north of the Oakwood Chapel. Address: 1601 Navasota St, Austin, TX 78702. Sessions are held the first Saturdays most of the months October-May, weather permitting. To receive updates on event information and other SAC news, send a request to firstname.lastname@example.org

Murder, Mayhem and Misadventure Walking Tour at Oakwood Cemetery
Please join us for the 12th
annual Murder, Mayhem & Misadventure Walking Tour at Historic Oakwood Cemetery, Austin's historic "outdoor museum" founded in 1839. The free tours cover the chilling, untimely deaths of residents of Oakwood portrayed by actors at their grave sites. The 45-minute tours highlight historical (not scary) events from the 1800s and start every 15-20 minutes between 10 am-3: Kids under adult supervision are welcome, but please leave your pets at home and wear closed-toed shoes.
The tours are sponsored by Save Austin's Cemeteries so donations are welcome to support gravestone cleaning and restoration projects of 1800s monuments. For more info, visit mmmtour.sachome.org
